Training macrosystems scientists requires both interpersonal and technical skills

Macrosystems science strives to integrate patterns and processes that span regional continental scales. The scope of such research often necessitates the involvement large interdisciplinary and/or multi-institutional teams composed scientists across a range career stages, diversity requires researchers hone both technical interpersonal skills. We surveyed participants in macrosystems projects funded by US National Science Foundation assess perceived importance different skills needed their research, as well types training they received. Survey results revealed mismatch between perceive important received, particularly for management highlight lessons learned from case studies, explore avenues further improvement undergraduate graduate education, discuss other opportunities scientists. Given trend toward beyond community, these insights are broadly applicable involved diverse, collaborative projects.
